Behind Commercial Express is a team of skilled individuals who bring expertise, commitment, and innovative thinking to everything they do. In this series, we’re introducing Chris Hasketh, our Technical Underwriter. With decades of experience in the insurance industry and a knack for problem-solving, Chris offers insights into his role, career path, and the lessons that have shaped his approach to underwriting.
Can you describe your role and what a typical day looks like for you?
Working in the Technical Underwriting Team means no day is truly typical. My responsibilities are varied and include providing training to Underwriters, drafting training plans, conducting audits, writing new schemes, and developing increased authority levels. I also liaise with Loss Adjusters, write guides and clauses, and serve as a key contact for the underwriting team when they need advice. Every day brings something unique, and the task list is endless.
Can you share your career path in the insurance industry and what brought you to Commercial Express?
I began my career in insurance as a YTS trainee in 1989, working on private lines products for a small independent broker in the West Midlands. After six years, I became the branch manager when the owner retired and sold the business to a larger brokerage chain. I stayed with that company for 19 years until I was made redundant.
This led me to commercial broking, where I worked on a delegated authority scheme. It was during this time that a Coverholder I worked with recognized my talent for rating and clauses and encouraged me to pursue underwriting. He said it would be a loss to the industry if I didn’t. I followed his advice and haven’t looked back since.
What upcoming projects or initiatives at Commercial Express will you be working on?
Our team is constantly evolving our product range and Insurer authority. While I can’t share specific details yet, we’re focusing on initiatives that will add significant value for our Broker partners. I’d advise everyone to keep an eye on our mail releases—exciting things are on the horizon.
What distinguishes Commercial Express from other MGAs?
It’s our forward-thinking approach and adaptability. The ability to respond quickly to changes in the industry sets Commercial Express apart.
Who has been a significant mentor or influence in your career?
My very first boss was a tough taskmaster. He had high expectations and believed in results, no matter the task. Back then, employment laws and health and safety were a bit more relaxed, so during downtime, I’d be cleaning gutters or washing his car. Those experiences instilled a strong work ethic in me that I carry to this day—always do what you’re paid to do, and do it well.
Another key influence was the Coverholder who encouraged me to transition into underwriting. Without his support and belief in my abilities, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting in your field, what would it be?
Listen and learn, and make sure to take lots of notes. There’s a wealth of experience in this industry, and many seasoned professionals are willing to support the next generation. Step outside your comfort zone, be confident in your decisions and stay committed to writing good business.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are how you learn. If you’re too scared of getting it wrong, you’ll struggle to make decisions, and decision-making is at the heart of success in underwriting.
